Once you’ve run out of soda, you can’t go drinking seawater. No matter how hard you try.

Water Collector

If you’re going along the coast, there is a chance turtles will swim to shore. With your axe equipped, aim for their head and swing. If you hit the shell, it’ll take several swings. Harvest the meat and the shell that’s dropped. This is one component of the Water Collector.

Next, collect four sticks (if you haven’t got them already). Using the B key, open your crafting menu. Go to the Food tab (the fourth from the left). In the bottom left, there’ll be an option to craft the Water Collector. Place the schematic and construct it.

If you’ve got multiple shells place a couple down. Or if you’ve got more than one shelter, you can construct one for each. Water Collectors are only useful when it begins raining. But when it starts to, water will slowly fill the shell and you’ll be able to drink from it.

Old Pot

Collecting water in a pot is an efficient method of cleaning dirty/salty water into fresh water. To purify the water, first find an Old Pot. These are found in campsites (not underground ones). I’ve found the easiest Old Pot location to be the beach campsite next to the Peninsula. If you don’t know where the Peninsula is, checkout the image below.

Check out our guide on where to find a map, if you haven’t got one already.

Next, you’ll need to find some polluted water. We’ve added a map which displays the location of all the polluted water in The Forest. Make sure you bring the Old Pot with you.

Once there, stand adjacent to the polluted lake with the Old Pot in hand. You’ll receive a prompt to fill the pot. If you don’t receive one, it means that water isn’t polluted.

Return to a firepit (or make one if you haven’t already), and place the pot filled with polluted water onto it. Give it some time, and than you’ll be able to remove the pot from the firepit.

Lakes

Lakes are a natural water source that’s safe to drink from, and there’s no chance it’ll run out anytime soon.

When you approach the lake, a button prompt will appear. If it doesn’t, this means that the water is polluted and to clean it you’ll need to use an Old Pot. Next, hold down the E key (or whatever key you’ve set the Take action to). Your character will begin drinking water from the lake.

Water Skin

Lastly, the Water Skin is a piece of equipment that stores water. It’s function acts much like a water bottle. If you’ve used either the Old Pot or Water Collector to get water, you’ll be able to fill the Water Skin with the clean water gained from them.

The Water Skin is made from the following materials:

  • 2 Deer Skins
  • 1 Rope
