Sims 4: How to Write Songs and License Them

This page will explain how to write songs in Sims 4 and license them to make money.

Players that become a musician have the option to play various different instruments. Once you have made a song, you can license it to receive daily royalty payments for one week.

The main downside of choosing te to become a musician is that you can only license one song per week, per instrument. Therefore, you can only receive royalty payments for one song written by the guitar (or any other instrument) at any given time.

For this reason, musicians earning potential is very limited, and you should expect to make less than a YouTuber or a Book Writer. But if you’re still adamant about becoming one, here is how to write a song for the first time…

How to Write Songs

Sims 4 characters cannot write songs until they reach level 8 with an instrument. You can achieve this by assigning them to an instrument, and they will level up over time. Unfortunately, though, getting to level 8 can take some time.

Alternatively, you can open the console and cheat. To do this, begin by clicking Ctrl+C to open the console. Next, type testingcheats true and click enter. Open the console again and type stats.set_skill_level major_guitar. Replace the guitar with any instrument you want to level up with. Doing this will make your character jump straight to level 8.

Now that you’re character’s musical ability is enough, they can begin writing music.

To write songs in Sims 4, begin by clicking on the instrument you want to play, and that you’re at least level 8 with. Next, click the Write Song… option. Select one of the songs that can be written (the sim will unlock more from level 9 onwards), and your character will start playing. It takes about 12 hours for a song to be written. Once complete, a prompt will appear that asks you to name the song.

If you’re sim stops mid-way through writing a song, don’t make the mistake of starting anew. Instead, you can pick up where you left off from the sims inventory.

How to License a Song in Sims 4

To licence a song in Sims 4, your character must be at least level 9 with an instrument. Once they have written a song, click on the mailbox. Here, select the License Song… option and choose the instrument. Your character will receive daily royalty payments for a week after doing this.

Your sim will be paid every day at 10 am. You can view how much you made in the Royalty Report, located in the ledger (top-right corner). In general, you can expect somewhere around $100-$500. In reality, low-levelled sims will be paid on the low side. Considering the pay, many players choose other careers.
